Dear Diary, Dear Reader

Unpopular opinion: It’s not chic to make fun of autistic people. In fact, it's embarrassing.

Last Week in class, I had to sit through four girls completely tearing apart an autistic girl behind her back for literally just existing. They were whispering, and going on and on about how "weird" she is and how she was making "cat noises."

I couldn't just sit there and listen to it, so I actually spoke up and pointed out to them that she’s autistic. I genuinely thought that maybe—just maybe—they didn't realize and would back off. But instead? They just kept going. Completely unbothered by how nasty they were being.

It left such a bad taste in my mouth. Being mean isn't a personality trait, and acting like basic empathy is optional doesn't make you cool or funny—it just makes you look SMALL.

This shouldn't even have to be an "unpopular opinion." It should just be basic human decency not to talk shit about people like that. Do better.
